Econet Wireless dominates the Zimbabwean telecoms market with nearly 70% of the shares according to the regulator’s statistics. Its competitors are Telecel, TelOne and NetOne.
Telecommunications operator Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced that it is strengthening its mobile roaming services for both its subscribers traveling outside Zimbabwe and subscribers of other networks visiting the country. The company says it is working with more than 266 prepaid roaming partners around the world to expand its footprint.
“ Our investments in infrastructure and continued network improvements already enable us to offer 4G/LTE roaming to visitors to Zimbabwe, significantly improving their data connectivity experience. Additionally, by Christmas [December 25, 2023, Editor’s note] , we will offer 4G/LTE roaming services to all our customers traveling outside of Zimbabwe to countries in the SADC region as well as several European destinations . Econet said in a statement.
This initiative was favored by the efforts that Econet has been making since 2021 to modernize its telecoms network. Since 2021, the company has increased investments in strengthening its network capacity to meet growing consumer demand for data and voice services. These include the modernization and expansion of 2G, 3G and 4G (LTE) networks, the deployment of 5G, the construction of a new data center, etc.
The strengthening of its roaming services should make it possible to improve the experience of its subscribers, both nationally and abroad. The initiative is also expected to strengthen Econet’s position in the Zimbabwean telecoms market. According to the latest statistics from the Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), the telecoms company controls almost 70% of the market share.
