Zimbabwe’s state-owned fixed line monopoly operator TelOne says it recovered USD76 million from debtors in the first seven months of this year, though it said the total amount owed stood at over USD260 million. Newsday reports that business and SME clients owe the company USD92 million, households USD83 million, the government USD41 million, parastatals USD36 million and local authorities USD10.6 million. The telco says that its debt collection methods include door-to-door visits, handing the debt collection duties to outside agencies, and promotions to reward customers who pay their bills. TelOne says income from the recovery of unpaid bills has helped fund a number of network projects, including Wi-Fi and fibre rollouts, though it says its deployment programme is still being hampered by its debt burden. The state-owned telco owes USD129 million to various suppliers.
