A group of around 350 subscribers of MTN Nigeria are taking the South African-owned mobile operator to court for breach of contract. Local newspaper This Day reports that the subscribers are collectively seeking NGN3 billion (USD18.4 billion) as damages for inadequate service quality. The claimants are also demanding that the High Court of Imo State order MTN to stop registering or adding new subscribers to its network until there are improvements to its facilities, systems and infrastructure.
In other news, MTN Nigeria has said that it has the infrastructure in place to launch an LTE network, but is waiting for the allocation of spectrum from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) before it begins offering 4G services on a commercial basis. ‘Once we get our test results and test cases passed we will apply to the NCC for spectrum and we expect it to be available in early 2014,’ Mustafa Golam, 3G service support coordinator at MTN Nigeria, told HumanIPO, adding that LTE network coverage would be initially limited to major urban areas.
