South African operator Vodacom has commercially launched voice-over-Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) technology over its 4G network, thus becoming the first cellco in the country to offer the service, TechCentral reports. VoLTE technology allows for faster call setup times, better voice quality, an overall improved level of service and the ability to continue browsing the web or using apps while simultaneously making a call. The VoLTE service is available free of charge to contract customers with Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets. Vodacom’s chief technology officer Andries Delport was cited as saying: ‘Within the next month, VoLTE functionality will be added to additional devices, and we expect usage will grow rapidly as more and more handset manufacturers include the functionality.’ As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Vodacom trialled VoLTE technology in September 2014.
