Cell C is planning to launch commercial LTE services in the Western Cape on 1 December, following the deployment of 280 LTE-enabled sites in the area. Cell C said it has spent ZAR2 billion (USD140.7 million) on its LTE network in 2015 and will invest a further ZAR6 billion in the next two years to roll out the technology in other provinces and extend coverage to other parts of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and the Western Cape. In addition, it also earmarked funding for an additional 1,600 fibre links in the new financial year (ending 31 December 2015), with CEO Jose Dos Santos saying: ‘The Western Cape is also in line for a core transmission backbone upgrade to 100Gbps … The LTE launch coincides with Cell C’s network harmonisation project, which is 95% complete, bringing wider coverage and more stability to the network in the region.’ Further, the operator has deployed dual carrier (DC)-HSPA+ services in the area, which had ‘dramatic positive impact on the 3G quality and speeds’.
