The launch date for mobile money interoperability in Ghana has been pushed back for a third time to May 2018, reports Mobile World Live, citing Citifmonline. Previous deadlines for the launch of the service were missed in November 2017, January 2018 and February 2018 due to a number of technical issues. Once the platform launches it will allow users of Ghana’s mobile money services to transfer cash via their handsets between different mobile network operators (MNOs).
Ghana Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia is reported as saying that the system to enable direct transfers between different mobile payment providers would be a vehicle to increase financial inclusion, move the country towards a society less reliant on cash and increase investment into the sector.
