South Africa’s MTN Group says it is still considering a possible listing of its unit in Uganda. MTN Uganda is currently negotiating with the government as it looks to renew its operating licence for a further ten years. Although authorities have denied reports that the licence award is dependent on MTN agreeing to a share sale, they do say that they would prefer more Ugandans to be ‘part of the company’. Bloomberg cites MTN Uganda’s chairman Charles Mbire as saying that the telco – which controls around 43% of all mobile subscribers in the country – is studying its options for ‘localising’ its ownership.
