Safaricom Ethiopia officially launched its commercial activities in Ethiopia on October 6, 2022. Since then, the company has been working to extend the coverage of its network to the entire extent of the national territory as soon as possible.
The telecommunications operator Safaricom Ethiopia is continuing to deploy its network in Ethiopia. The company announced last week that it had expanded to five additional cities, bringing its national footprint to 21 cities.
“ We are excited to expand our coverage to Hawassa, Assela, Jigjiga, Sodo and Dilla, with more cities expected to join the growing Safaricom Ethiopia family. We are also delighted to have extended our services to other regional states, ” said Anwar Soussa, Managing Director of Safaricom Ethiopia.
The commissioning of Safaricom’s network in these five new cities is part of the gradual deployment of its services in Ethiopia. The company is thus getting closer to its objective of covering 25 cities and 25% of the Ethiopian population by next April. Last November, the company announced that it had crossed the one million subscriber mark only a month after the official launch of its services in the East African country.
With the acceleration of the deployment of its network, Safaricom hopes to cover the entire extent of Ethiopian territory as quickly as possible in order to better compete with the incumbent operator Ethio Telecom and a possible third telecom operator. Since entering the Ethiopian telecom market, Safaricom has built 561 active 2G/3G/4G sites, as well as two data centers. The company currently operates at 41 shared sites, while 931 more are under construction.
