MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest wireless operator by customers, has so far seen the highest proportion of subscribers switch to a rival network since mobile number portability (MNP) was introduced on 22 April 2013. Technology Times cites figures released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) as showing that 47% of total number ports in June 2013 were away from MTN’s network, followed by Indian-owned Airtel Nigeria with 23%, Globacom with 19% and Etisalat Nigeria, a subsidiary of the UAE’s Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat), with 11%. Meanwhile, Etisalat saw the highest proportion of total incoming ports in June (50%), followed by Globacom (29%), Airtel (12%) and MTN (9%). Tony Ojobo, director of public affairs at the NCC, was reported as saying that MNP has so far deepened competition in the market.
