MTN Ghana, the country’s largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscribers, has announced customers will be paying more for calls and data services from 1 May to fund an increase in the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL). In a statement issued on 30 April, the company informed subscribers that ‘following the introduction of the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, which has resulted in a 1% increase in the NHIL, talk time and data charges have been adjusted to reflect the tax change.’ Other telecom operators are expected to follow suit. The hike in the NHIL and a COVID-19 Health Levy of 1% on VAT were among a series of measures introduced in the 2021 budget to boost health spending and help the economy recovery from the pandemic.
