MTN Rwanda, the country’s leading mobile operator by subscribers, is reportedly planning to invest more than USD20 million in its network in order to provide improved services to the majority of the country’s population, local news outlet Rwanda Eye reports. According to MTN Rwanda CEO Ebenezer Asante, speaking at a press conference at MTN’s headquarters in Nyarutarama, expanding the cellco’s 3G network remains a priority, and the company will continue to upgrade its infrastructure throughout 2014 in order to provide the most expansive 2G and 3G coverage in the country. The executive stated: ‘A stronger fibre link is being constructed to reduce network downtime experienced in the past months. More 2G and 3G sites are being rolled out to improve coverage in Kigali and rural areas.’ Further, Asante disclosed that MTN has contributed RWF95 billion (USD195.71 million) to national development over the last five years, with 90% of the company’s revenue retained in Rwanda.
