Orange Egypt, the country’s second largest mobile operator in terms of subscribers, has formally launched its LTE network, almost twelve months after securing a 4G licence from the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MCIT) and the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA). The cellco paid USD484 million for a 20MHz block of LTE-suitable spectrum back in October 2016. Coverage details remain unclear at this juncture, but a statement on the operator’s website reads: ‘Orange has officially launched 4G and it will be available in more and more places over time. ’
TeleGeography notes that mobile market leader Vodafone Egypt has also switched on its LTE network, which is currently available in more than 30 separate locations. Rival operator Etisalat Egypt meanwhile, claims to be in the midst of an ‘on-air 4G trial phase’. For its part, fixed line incumbent Telecom Egypt recently revealed plans to enter the mobile 4G sector under the ‘We’ brand name.
