South Sudan’s telecoms regulator, the National Communication Authority (NCA), has suspended the operations of cellco Vivacell, reports the Sudan Tribune. ‘The NCA would like to inform the public that the operations of Vivacell mobile network operator have been suspended, effective from 20 March 2018,’ a statement from the regulator’s Director General Lado Wani Kenyi said. The letter added that although the NCA had given Vivacell one week to suspend all operations ‘due to the inconvenience the suspension might cause to the customers’, international traffic would be halted immediately. According to sources, the move followed Vivacell’s failure to pay taxes and to comply with government regulations.
Vivacell, which is majority-owned by Lebanon’s Fattouch Investment Group, competes with MTN and Zain in the South Sudanese mobile market.
