The government of Sweden is considering tightening security restrictions for mobile network operators (MNOs) and equipment suppliers ahead of the rollout of 5G technology. A report from Reuters cites the country’s Minister for Energy and Digital Development, Anders Ygeman, as saying: ‘We want to be able to exclude components, suppliers and operators from the upcoming build-out of 5G that are seen as presenting a threat to Sweden’s security.’
While not naming any companies individually, the measure is presumed to be aimed at Huawei of China, which is already facing bans in the US and other markets due to concerns that its equipment could be used for spying by the Beijing government.
A ban for Huawei in Sweden could be good news for Scandinavian vendors Ericsson and Nokia, though any retaliatory measures by Beijing could see the European suppliers miss out on contracts in the lucrative Chinese market.
