The Ugandan government has agreed to the renewal of MTN Uganda’s operating licence, but with ‘new stringent terms’. Uganda’s Information and ICT Minister Frank Tumwebaze has revealed that a stock market listing forms part of the conditions for renewal, as does an agreement to support mobile number portability (MNP). The telco, which is the largest of Uganda’s cellular operators with 43% of all subscribers, must also provide nationwide network coverage and ensure that minimum quality of service (QoS) levels are met. MTN said earlier this week that it is studying its options for a share sale in Uganda.
